What’s up everybody? Channa D here! I’ll be giving you a review of the 4K Ultra High Definition Blu-ray version of the Martian.

What’s up everybody? So I’m sure most of my subscribers already know, if you’re new to the channel I did just upgrade to 4K. Got a 4K TV, got a 4K AV receiver and got a 4K Ultra High Definition Blu-ray player, the Oppo 203. I also have an XBOX One S to watch 4K Blu-ray movies as well. So the Martian was shot with 4K and 6K cameras. However, it is only a 2K digital intermediate. What this means is most of the visual effects will be mastered at 2K, however, all of the live effects are still in 4K and 6K. There was also some color grading from what I’ve read and it looks phenomenal. This is definitely up there for a reference level 4K experience. What does that mean? That means it’s going to look awesome. Even if you don’t have an expensive 4K TV. I did watch this on my XBOX One S. Attached to a budget TV under $700 4K TV you can still see all the detail. You can still see all the crazy textures on the hills and sand on the rover, on his suit, everything! It’s still awesome. On my LG OLED E6 it’s insane. Especially with all the lights off. Now you still have the black bars on top and bottom because that is the digital cinema 4K. As we say 4K or Ultra High Definition, we mean 3840 x 2160p. That’s the resolution size. Digital cinema 4K is actually 4096 vertical with 2160 horizontal. They crop it to 4096 x 1760 and this 4K cinemascope. It gives 2.39 : 1 aspect ratio. And when I’m watching it on my LG with all the lights off, you can’t even see anything else. Like it’s just black. All you really see is that strip of movie and it’s pretty crazy. I’ve definitely been enjoying watching movies on my E6 OLED with the lights off and nobody else around. It’s fantastic. A lot of the cooler stuff in this movie is going to be happening outside. So I got a quick list here with some chapter numbers and I’ll put that down in the description. So you guys can check it out too if you decide to rent or buy this movie.

Chapters 1, 2, 3. The beginning of the movie. Got a lot of stuff going on outside. Then we get to parts in the movie where there’s a lot of like just a little bit of scenery outside. And there’s a lot of dialogue. They’re trying to figure out how to save this guy and all that. So we got chapters 5, 10, 12, 14 where you are going to see a little bit of the outside and what he’s doing and you know he’s working outside collecting things and what not. 12 and 14 are also good. Chapter 17 has a really nice surround sound experience. I did watch this in Dolby true HD. I’m still waiting on a refund, I returned some stuff to get two new Klipsch speakers and then set up my Dolby Atmos. And then I’ll be able to kind of tell you guys what Dolby Atmos and DTS:X feels like. Can’t really show you and I don’t really know how to record that. So we’ll see what happens when it happened. 21 is also a good one and 22 has an awesome Lord of the Rings reference! And if you’ve seen the Martian, you know the actor that I’m talking about. He also plays Ned Stark in Game of Thrones. You know who I’m talking about. And then from chapter 24 on, it’s like the Holy Grail. You get a whole bunch of stuff going on outside in Mars. And like I said earlier, the textures, you’re looking at all the rock formations, the sand, everything is just super detailed. Everything on Matt Damon’s suit, the little vehicle, the rover that they got going on, it’s an awesome 4K Blu-ray. The movies pretty good. It’s a little funny. My wife didn’t like how funny it was but whatever, I thought it was great.

So to wrap things up, we have a reference quality video experience. An amazing audio experience. I haven’t been able to test Dolby Atmos yet. But soon enough, my friends, soon enough. And the story I probably give the story about four out of five. So that’s it for me today. And this is my first 4K Ultra High Definition Blu-ray review. So write down in the comments if you liked it, if you didn’t.  Let me know what I can do better next time. And I’ve got this stack of 4K Blu-Rays here. This one here has DTS:X, so maybe I’ll wait until I get my Atmos setup and my ceiling speakers dialed in before I review that.

Anyway, thank you so much for reading, my name is Channa D and I’ll see you next time!
