Today’s movie, we are checking out the Sicario and it Stars Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro. This is kind of like a crime, drama and this 4k Ultra High Definition Blu-Ray does not disappoint! It was recorded on Harry Elexxa XT and it was shot in 3.4k. Now I know what you’re saying, that it’s not real 4k but this camera they used does have 14+ stops of dynamic range. So if you’ve got a TV with HDR, it’s probably going to look pretty insane!
Now it does have a 4k Master and with this kind of a movie, it actually looks pretty good because there’s no visual effects. This is like a regular movie; this isn’t like a “Passenger”, this isn’t like “X-MEN Apocalypse”, this isn’t that, when you have tons of special effects. This is more along the lines of “The Revenent” and I would say “The Martian” even though they have effects as well and those effects are done in 2k I believe. But here, there’s really no visual effect, the little bit of visual effect they did have were in 4k as well. So you have some pretty striking images here. Now the other part of this that made it a definite pick-up is that the movie is actually good! This isn’t like “San Andreas”, this isn’t like “Assassin’s Creed”; this is a good movie. I will definitely pick it up on Amazon for about 20 bucks. I think it’s still around that price, you get the 4k Blu-Ray, you’ll get the regular Blu-Ray and you’ll get your digital copy as well.
Now that’s out of the way, am sure people are like “Whoa dude, this is another 4k Blu-Ray, I can’t afford all these things”. You can also rent them; there’s a company called 3D Blu-Ray Rental and I’ll flash the URL on the screen here (www.store-3d-blurayrental.com) and you guys can check them out. I subscribe to them, it’s like a Netflix type of service; I believe it’s a smaller company and they are based in Chicago or Illinois or somewhere. It usually takes five days, me to mail one, and me to receive one; five business days. It’s not that bad, its 4k or 3D Blu-Rays, whatever you like. I think they also rent PlayStation for games along with Xbox One games.
Now that all that is out of the way, let’s talk about picture quality. I did watch this on my LG E6 OLED, I played this on my Oppo UDP-203 and I got to say, it’s pretty awesome! From the very first scene, you guys are in Arizona, you got a lot of bright highlights, you got a lot of texture, the helmets are shinning, the guns are matte with a little bit of shine. You know, they are going into the building to check it out; it’s great. Then when we go into like 25 minutes more, and they are going into Juarez Mexico, that whole scene is great. I think it’s about like 20 minutes, something like that because around the 44 minute mark, Emily Blunt goes up on the roof to check Juarez from the neighboring city in the United State and its dusk and the sky is lit up with the bunch of different clouds, all kinds of textures, highlight the HDR is on point. And you’re getting so much details on the clouds, the clouds that are far away, the clouds that are close up; and you get this nice like blue, like dusky kind of night; action going on. It’s really a killer.
Now everything that is happening inside is great as well. You are not going to have like crazy, like bright darks. Ok there’s this bar scene and you’re getting a lot of great detail. The neon lights are shinning on the actors faces and there’s a whole bunch of depth, there’s a whole bunch of detail; you know the texture of her shirt, the dude she’s talking to, his face. Its good on the outdoors, its good on the indoor but you are going to get more high dynamic range stuff going on when they are outside, obviously.
Now on the chapter 22 – 23 mark, they’re starting their main objective or their main mission and it also start in that dusk time. So they’re suiting up and in the background you got great looking clouds, great colors, you got some pinks, some blues, some whites; it looks pretty awesome! When they are actually going on their mission, they all have like this thermal scopes and you see like that kind of black and white stuff going on and then they go back to what they’re looking like at night time. And you got this beautiful color grading. Starting on the Right with a very deep black on the top, it goes into a blue dark blue and a very blue and a little bit of like scattered white highlight right in the center, into yellow and orange and then you see the black from the land, you know it’s dark so it looks pretty great!
My OLED shinning, the Oppo is shining and Sicario was definitely shinning. This is a definite pick up, it’s an old movie but it’s a great movie. I’ve never seen it before and I was like “This a great movie “; everybody should watch this. So that’s all the time I have for you guys today. Once again my name is Channel D, and I will see you next time!
