What’s up everybody? Channa D. your techno dad here, and I’ve got a really, largish, unboxing here. It’s gonna be pretty awesome and I’m very excited about it. I got a new pair of surround sound speakers, stands, cables, banana plugs. We’re gonna get into that right after the jump.
And I’m back. So most of my subscribers know I upgraded my home theater receiver to the Denon AVR-X6300H. I’ll put a link in the description down below to that video, so you guys can check it out, if you haven’t checked it out already. I also got a 4K Ultra High Definition Blu Ray player, that’s the Oppo UDP-203, I’ll put a link in the description for that video as well.
Now when you combine those two components with, 4K Ultra High Definition Blu Rays, you get something called Dolby Atmos (0:56). I’m currently running a 5.1 set up. I have a couple of speakers that are mounted onto beams attached to the ceiling, so I’m going to move those surround speakers, and those are going to be my Atmos speakers, that are going to be firing down toward the listening area. And these guys are going to be the new surround sound speakers.
So first things first, we’re going to get the speakers out of the box and check them out.
Oh yeah. We got some cool stuff here, from Klipsch, speakers of the sound.
Oh wow. These are going to be the surround sound speakers? These look pretty awesome.
Look at this, look at that port, things huge. I think one of the coolest things is that, if you notice, there are no speaker grill holes here because, so these just have magnets. And that’s how they attach. Look at that, super clean. And it’s one of their little design features for this reference premiere line. I currently have some reference speakers, by Klipsch, so this is a reference premiere. 5 Inch copper driver here, with a 1 inch track tricks horn, rubberized area here, cuts down on the harshness. These look super nice, and they are real heavy, nice wood all over. Even this bass down here, this thing, you can remove it, this thing also is wood. It has a little rake here, like reverse rake, so this is kind of tilting back a little bit.
Alright, so I’m getting super excited now. I’m going to get the speaker stands assembled, and gonna go put everything up on the dining table, and gonna start ripping up the carpet. So I’ll do a little time lapse, or speed up of that whole situation for you guys. Alright, cool! I can’t wait.
So I took the bases off the Klipsch speakers, it looks more connected to the stand, with the bases kind of an extra piece, it didn’t look right, and also angled the speaker up, which I did not need to do, since the speakers already at ear level. So this is a great combination, and another cool thing is, I’m not sure if you can see it, yeah you can see it, the Klipsch gives you these little felt jobbies, and I just used those to cover up these screw holes. And Sanus gives you pads for the speakers, put those on the corners. This is a great little set up. So I’m going to get ready, and start ripping up carpet.
And we’re back again. So, what did you see in the video? You saw me upstairs, it was Saturday night, ripping up the carpet, installing in the speaker cables, going over to the new surround sound speakers. Also in the video, I wanted to point out, if you do buy these particular Sanus stands, to properly conceal the cables, you need to remove the top plate where the speaker is, so you can get that cover on properly. I’m sure you saw it in the video back there. One thing I didn’t get to show you was, the hole at the bottom of the speaker stands, where the cable has to go through.
So I installed the spikes on the stands, the stands come with either rubber feet, or like a hardwood floor whatever, or spikes for carpet. Since I have carpet I put in the spikes. I had the speaker stand in place, and then I just lifted up the back end, lifted the spikes off the back end, fed the speaker cable through the hole, put the speaker stand back down, stomped on them, so you hear the “pop, pop” from the spikes, and you’re good to go.
I really like the stands because they are all wood, everything’s all wood on them, and they were recommended to me from somebody at Crutchfield. They’re at 30 inches tall, which is the perfect height. Your room could be different, depending on the size couch you have, but for us that’s the perfect height. And as you saw from the video, they’re aiming right at the listening area. And my wife and I watched Mrs. Perrigren’s, the 4K Ultra High Definition Blu Ray, last night, and wow. It was totally, totally awesome. So much more immersive now that my surround sound speakers are at ear level, instead of just being higher up shooting down.
My wife though keeps freaking out, there’s a scene with a bunch of breaking plates, and she’s, she’s just doing one of these (looks over shoulders), just, she’s a little confused, it was freaking her out a little bit. And she’s like, “Can you turn that off?”, I was like “No, sorry, can’t turn it off”.
So on to the speakers, my thoughts on the speakers, I think they’re phenomenal. So my upgrade is going from a Klipsch Reference Speaker, to these new Klipsch Reference Premier Speakers. Now the main difference is that these first Klipsch Reference Speakers that I have, that are mounted on the walls, they’re made of like a plastic enclosure, these are all wood enclosures. You’re always going to get a better sound with a wooden enclosure. I actually set these up as main speakers, and we listened to some Dave Matthews, I have a Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds live at Radio City Blu Ray, and wow, it was like being right there. Just in stereo, it was like being right there, it was awesome. Then I added in the subwoofer, and that just totally rounded out the sound pretty perfect. I have a 10 inch subwoofer, and I’m planning on upgrading to a 12.
So if you want to make the move to a full fledged 5.1, 5.1.4, 7 point whatever, I would go with these speakers because you can kind of piece meal everything, like I’m doing, because I can’t afford all of it at once. I bought the two surround speakers, they retail for $420, I got them for $350 for the pair. The center channel is $369, I didn’t get any deal on that, that’s just straight up what it is. And that should be arriving tomorrow, so I’ll do another unbox, and you guys can check that out. It won’t be a crazy install. I did invest in some braided speaker wire, and I’ll make another video on speaker wire, and what kind of cables I’m using to power my set up.
So I got the two surround speakers, and then the center channels coming in, and once I acquire a ladder, you know we’ve still got a whole bunch of snow, and we’re supposed to get another 10 feet of snow starting tomorrow, man. If I can get a ladder here, I’m going to reposition my old surround sound speakers that are on the beams, at the ceiling, to a more, atmos (9:28) kind of configuration, where they’re like middle of the ceiling, coming down toward the listening area.
If I really wanted too, I could replace my front, my old Klipsch, with another pair of these RP-150M’s, and they’d be totally awesome. However, I’m a big boy now, and I’ve really really for a long time wanted Klipsch floor standing speakers. So I’m looking at getting a pair of the RP-260F’s. I’ll put a link in the description so you guys can check that out, because these things look awesome. I heard they’re pretty awesome.
So, the next upgrade to my home theater are going to be these floor standing speakers. Then after that I’m going to upgrade from the 10 inch subwoofer that I have now, to the 12 inch subwoofer. And since my Dennon receiver can do a dual subwoofer configuration, maybe I’ll have both the 10 inch and the 12 inch. That would be pretty insane.
So yeah, like I said, if you’re looking to move up from a sound bar to a proper 5.1 set up, you can always piece meal these things together. And get a pair of these bookshelves, have them as your left and right channel. Next, get yourself a center channel. Next, you can get another pair of these bookshelves, put them at your listening area, like you saw earlier in the video. Then you get yourself a subwoofer, then you’ve got 5.1, then you wanna add two speakers in the ceiling, you’ve got your 5.1.2, and you’ve got Dolby Atmos.
