What’s up guys! Today we’ve got a Christmas classic, 1988 Die Heart on iTunes 4k. It isn’t a 4k Blu-ray So, this is the next best thing. I’m not gonna get into any fly details but it does involve cops and robbers. I’m just gonna give you my thoughts on the video and audio quality. But first some quick tech specs. The movie was shot in 35 millimeters. It’s got a 4K DI. It’s rated R, for in time is 132 minutes. Aspect ratio is 2:35.1. So, for your watching on TVs you get those black bars on your screen. I’m sure most of you already own this on Blu-ray and I gotta say there’s a definite increase in sharpness and clarity on the 4k stream. The finer details like the ribbing on MacLaine’s tank top are now even more visible, even when his top is covered in dirt blood and grease. Facial close-ups now have distinct pores and stubble nicely rendered and not like the blurred mess found on the regular Blu-ray. Scenes now appear cleaner and tighter with better separation between foreground and backgrounds that really enhance the depth and dimension to the image. There’s no HDR in this. So, color palette hasn’t really changed from the regular Blu-ray. Blacks do have little crushing parts with some of the characters black suits blending into the surrounding backgrounds. But I didn’t notice any macro blocking or any other issues I’ve noticed on other streams. It could just be I had a really solid connection though.
Audio, and this is either Dolby Digital or multi-channel PCM5.1. I chose to listen to the PCM mix and it sounded just like the Blu-rays DTS-HD version. I’ve never found this soundtrack to be demo worthy but it’s clean with decent discreet sounds placed throughout specific speakers. Gunfire and little sounds like breaking glass were detailed and soundstage had decent depth but I didn’t think it was particularly that widespread. Bass response had good mid-range during shoot outs like the glass shooting scene. But it never dug really as deep as I would have wanted especially during the roof explosion scene in the third act. Dialogue was always clean. So, no issues there.
So, for audio I’d have to go to the 7. Hopefully they give it a fresh new immersive mix. If it ever makes its way to 4k Blu-ray but for what it is it sounded fine for an action movie from the 80s. For video quality I’m gonna go with a 7.9. There’s a noticeable increase in sharpness and clarity over the regular Blu-ray. But if you’re a grain hater there’s plenty of grain here. Now if HDR could have been used, we might have gotten some better shadow detail and better and richer colors.
Now if you’ve got an Apple TV and you love this movie, this is must-buy. And if you’ve never seen it, it’s worth a $4 rental as it’s one of the best action movies ever made.
