Edge of Tomorrow | Apple TV 4K Review

What’s up guys! Welcome back spare change. Today in for review, we’ve got 2014 Edge of Tomorrow on iTunes 4k. It is on our 4k Blu-ray yet. So, streaming is the next best thing. I won’t get into any plot details but I think the movie is highly underrated. I’m just gonna give you my thoughts on the video and audio quality.

Now for some quick tech specs. The movie was shot on 35 millimeters. It’s got a 2 KBI. It’s rated PG-13. One time is 113 minutes. Aspect ratio is 2:35.1. So, if you’re watching on a television, you’ll get those black bars on the top and bottom of your screen. So, for video quality, I thought it looked excellent. Detail and sharpness got a noticeable bump over the regular Blu-ray. Textures on clothing and the battle suits looked very detailed with scratches and battle-worn damage being clearly visible. Facial close-ups revealed better definition with facial lines and pores obviously looking better than the regular Blu-ray as well. The beach battle in Chapter 3 had great textures with individual sand particles and debris flying everywhere. HDR usage brought out richer color saturation and the overall tone of the film seemed a bit warmer.

There’s some nice pic highlights from explosions and gunfire on that Beach attack. But I never thought it got extremely bright like in more recent releases, black levels were deep in contrast but I did notice some compression artefacts on the walls in chapter 9 while cage was facing the mimics. There was some macro blocking on the walls and some loss of detail. I checked on the regular Blu-ray and I didn’t notice any of those issues.

This movie also comes in 3D Blu-ray as well. And I think it’s one of the better experiences out there, chapter 3, peach attack is demo worthy if you have a 3D display. The part where the soldiers drop from the ships had amazing depth. As they fall from the sky and swing around in the air, all the mud and debris can be seen flying through the air in front of your face .and when the mimics show up they often swing their tentacles around and they come straight out and pop off the screen. It’s pretty cool effect. Separation between foreground and background elements look fantastic from beginning to end and had very deep depth and dimension. Detail and sharpness aren’t as good as the 4k version but the added layers of 3D more than makes up for it.

Audio on the 3D version is in DTS HD 7.1 and it’s one of the best 7.1 mixes out. The beach attack again in Chapter 3, it’s a stand out but the mimics moving in and out of the soundstage and gunfire shots in every direction. Ambient effects are subtle and always present and panning effects like helicopter, flyovers were seamless even without height speakers being used. Bass responses reference, little text just about any subwoofer out there.  Just play the first 20 seconds at reference level. And if your subwoofer isn’t capable, it just may blow. Audio on the 4k stream is either Dolby digital 5.1 or multi-channel PCM 5.1. I listen to the PCM version and found it somewhat similar to the 7.1 mix but obviously not as immersive without having the extra two channels to fill in the rear gap.  Soundstage sounded like the DTS mix even down to the ultrasonic bass note in the first 20 seconds. Dialog sounded great on both mixes So, no issues there. So, for audio on the 4k mix, I’d have to give to 7.5. If it was 7.1 then the stream would have been demo where the material. For the 3D audio mix, I’m gonna go with a nine. Excellent bass along with effective panning and subtleties to make it one of my go-to discs for surround sound. If it was in Dolby Atmos or DTS X, it’d be even better.

For 4k video I’d have to go with an 8. It was shot on film So, there is a fine layer of grain throughout but its cleaner looking in the regular Blu-ray. There is a slight softness to it at times but it’s worth a purchase if you liked the movie. For 3D quality, I think I’m gonna have to go with an 8.9. The 3D is present from beginning to end and there can be a tremendous amount of depth to the image. It can get a little dark at times while pop outs and the 3D aliens, they look awesome.

If I had to choose which version to go for, it’ll of course be the 3D version. There’s a lot of demo worthy moments in this disc. It’s just too bad there’s no immersive mix for it.
